Mike Burtscher was a surprise 6th overall pick by the Alaska Aces in the past 2009 PBA Draft. Very few had heard of Burtscher before the Draft but Alaska coach Tim Cone was confident in his choice saying the Alaska rookie compares favorably with PBA veterans Rudy Hatfield and Mark Pingris.
“Burtscher’s work ethic is infectious, his attitude is worn on his sleeve, and his athleticism is wow!” said Cone of Burtscher. “If you like Rudy Hatfield, if you like Mark Pingris, then you will like this kid. I am looking forward to watching him grow. He will become a fan favorite. That is for sure.”
The Alaska mentor cautions that Burtscher has a long way to go and needs to improve his game in almost all aspects.
“Burtscher is very raw no doubt and for the moment he lives off his athleticism,” said Cone. “We will put him through some daily drills to improve his game. In the meantime, as that part of his game develops, we expect him to contribute mightily on defense, the boards and running the floor. Those are three areas of the game in which you do not need great skills, just a great motor, which he has. We expect the way he plays to really infect the team.”
