The Alaska Aces vented all their frustration on the Talk N Text Tropang Texters with a thorough 92-69 rout in the 2013 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Friday
The Aces streaked to their fifth consecutive victory to stay on top of the standings. The Tropang Texters (2 wins, 3 losses) dropped into a tie at fifth place.
The other teams include the Petron Blaze Boosters (4-1), the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (3-1), the Barako Bull Energy Cola (3-2), the Meralco Bolts (2-3), the GlobalPort Batang Pier (2-3), the San Mig Coffee Mixers (1-3), the Air21 Express (1-4) and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (1-4).
The Aces thus gained sweet revenge on the Tropang Texters. Alaska lost to the eventual champion Talk N Text, 3-4, in a best-of-seven semifinals in the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup that went the full seven-game distance just the past PBA conference.
The Aces roared to their best start in 15 years in an import-laden conference.
“We did a great job on both ends of the floor. We took them out of their rhythm and comfort zone. We brought the best out of each other that’s why we’re winning like this,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.
The Aces started the game like a house on fire as they zoomed to a 22-11 double-digit spread late in the first period.
From that point forward, the league leaders never looked back.
The Aces resumed their onslaught in the third quarter where they virtually dismantled the dazed Texters.
Heading into the payoff period, Alaska was ahead by 29 points, 73-44. The Aces erected their biggest lead of 31 points, 78-47, after Dondon Hontiveros drilled a triple with 9:52 remaining in the match.
Alaska’s unheralded import Robert Dozier scored a team-high 23 points while Cyrus Baguio led local scoring with 17 points, on 8-of-13 shooting, and three assists.
“Effective kami both offensively and defensively kaya nakuha namin yung ganitong panalo against Talk ‘N Text,” said Baguio.
Calvin Abueva, JVee Casio and Hontiveros added 10 markers each.
The Tropang Texters, still basking in the afterglow of a Philippine Cup championship have now lost two straight. Instead of being on top Talk N Text is in unfamiliar territory in the middle of the pack.
TNT import Keith Benson had a game-high 27 points for the Tropang Texters. But the team’s locals failed to carry their share of the burden. Jason Castro, with 11 points, was the only local with double-digit scores.
